Each year, in the small fishing town of Taiji, Japan, thousands of dolphins, porpoises, and small whales are driven into a cove and killed in what is one of the largest cetacean hunts in the world. The hunt typically runs from September through March.
The drive hunt involves fishermen using boats to herd dolphins into a confined bay. Some animals are selected for sale to marine parks and aquariums. The rest are killed for their meat.
Conservation organisations, marine scientists, and animal welfare advocates worldwide have called for the hunt to end. Many countries have formally objected through diplomatic channels.
Our petition calls on the Mayor of Taiji, the Prime Minister of Japan, the Japanese Minister of Fisheries, and the Emperor of Japan to bring this practice to an end.
